My biggest creative role model

My biggest creative role model is my grandad.

He is the definition of a creative tinkerer.

I remember, as a child and even now, visiting their house every other weekend and seeing all the statues, sculptures, and other wacky ideas he was working on in his garage.

My grandad is a self-made man. He started by making wrought iron garden furniture in the 60s, before pivoting to building indoor equipment such as ironing boards and baby stair gates!

He worked right into his late 70s and had to be practically coerced to retire.

Every time I see him, he is working on something creative and physical.

Some of my most memorable projects:

• Converting a 1950's Chrysler into a 100% electric car
• Making sculptures out of bronze, building the furnace and moulds himself
• Restoring an authentic WWII air-raid siren (and playing it in his garden)

I will always be inspired by his relentless desire to learn and create.

Perhaps that is one of the key reasons why I pursued a creative career.

(Although I usually sit behind a computer screen and he is in a hardy workshop.)
